Congratulations on your 50th podcast and the two-and-a-half book contract!
I relate to your “flipped switch” of apologetics. Not to sound redundant, but for me it was that I came to KNOW that the truth was…actually true!
You made a statement that peaked my listening (well lots of statements peaked my listening) because of a continual discussion I have with a coworker. It has to do with the wrath of God in regards to Christ’s atoning work on the cross. He recently stated, “Nowhere do the words wrath and cross come together in scripture.” How would you ROAR in this situation?
Thank you for your obedience in this NEEDFUL ministry!
Charla,
Thank you for your comments! That is interesting that your coworker thinks that the words have to be side by side for them to reference each other. I would start by asking this coworker what he/she believes Christ accomplished on the cross? I’ve heard people try to explain it away in all sorts of things, but for each explanation, we are ultimately left with a dying and rising Jesus who did not die for our sins. If that is the case, then we are still in our sins and there was no purpose to Christ’s death and resurrection. The very people who are trying to get around an “unloving God’ who would sentence His son to death are creating a God who would allow this to happen to His son FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. I can’t think of a more perverse view of God. Everyone dies. Why would one more death matter? Unless Christ’s death was literally needed to fix a literal problem (sin), then it’s just a useless bloodbath.
As far as wrath and the cross not being side by side, I’d recommend that they explain the following verses:
Romans 5:8-9 ESV
But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
John 3:36 ESV
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
1 Thessalonians 5:9 ESV
For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, (again, how does Jesus obtain our salvation if not through the cross? And if the cross didn’t obtain our salvation, then why did it happen?)
Romans 3:25 ESV
Whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. (propitiation means a sin offering, by which the wrath of the deity shall be appeased, also atonement)
But again, I would first start out by finding out what your coworker thinks about Christ and why He came and why He died and rose again, or if he/she actually believes that He DID come in the flesh, die a literal death, and literally rise again. If this individual doesn’t believe these are actual, historical events, then you’ve got bigger fish to fry. Again, aim FIRST for understanding their position before you try to answer it.
I hope that helps!
Happy 50th! What a fun episode. I did not realize how much work went into creating a podcast! I am so thankful for your ministry. I love the podcast, the audio apologetics blog, and the book! Thank you for all that you do!
Thank you so much Alyssa! Yes, a LOT of work goes into this. But we feel honored to be able to contribute. 🙂
I’ve been working my way through your podcasts, having discovered it through your wonderful book. You guys are the best, and I wish I knew you both, because you’re totally my people . Thank you for all of this, it’s truly having such an impact for our family.
Thank you for all you guys do! I discovered your podcast “randomly” after seeing you had a book out on Amazon. I now know it was not coincidence. I had been trying to find apologetics debates and I just could not seem to find any. I am so thankful for your podcast as well as the links and resources you provide in the notes. They are so helpful! My aim is to strengthen my faith and arguments so I can raise my young sons to be confident in the Truth before they start school.
Keep up the good work! You are making an impact. I am praying for you <3
